| No golf yesterday as the weather is being unkind and conditions out on the course, soft to downright unplayable. So with time on my hands I took to a little bit of portrait photography. Meet the pseudo family, who share our home. All are precious to me in various ways. The Fuchsia's were made from cuttings. The plant is in our garden, though it originally came from my Hubby's parents garden in S. Wales. The Geranium's have been with me for years. I put them outside in the Summer and bring them inside in the Winter, away from the cold weather. The Pelargonium's are a new addition to the household, were given as a present by the Village Association for services to the community. The Orchid was a present from friend's who live the other end of the country and came to stay with their dog. Originally it had 3 flowering stems, which lasted for months. Now it has a new stem, from which a flowering bud is forming. The basket of Hyacinth's was a Christmas present from Frances, relative, friend and fellow Grandparent. I wish I had smelly vision on my blog for you to enjoy the fragrance. |

Big Garden Bird watch 25-26 January https://www.rspb.org.uk/birdwatch/ Count the wildlife that's counting on you, go to the R.S.P.B. web-site to find out more of what is involved. I am signed up. My variety of bird feeders are filled up and water is available to attract as many different birds and animals to the garden. http://www.thewildoutside.com/index.php/2012-10-05-14-49-20/wildlife-info/1529-birdfood-help#.UnkbgRyr4So.twitter In my experience age is no barrier to friendship, but age is a barrier to the use of technology and social media. It is notable that in my circle of contacts on social media, people are mostly younger than me. I am definitely in the minority of people that are in my age group or older to be engaged in social media (e.g. Twitter, Facebook) and having a blog is met with raised eyebrows and the inevitable question. WHY? (That's a whole different blog) I use a computer for a lot of different things, but since getting a tablet last year, I have been learning how to master the land of app's. Challenging, but has opened up a whole new world to me. Don't get me wrong I am no expert and rely heavily on hubby to sort me out when things don't go according to plan. Now he is an expert. Love it when I ask what he thinks about me buying a piece of technology, no sooner said than research done and purchase made. Enquiries to him about the purchase of a pair of shoes not so enthusiastically acted upon. :) My blog and web-site is 2 weeks old. I'm enjoying the discipline of making a post for each day. Every day the site is getting hits from people viewing my posts. What I have found puzzling is that nobody is prepared to leave a comment. Other blogs are just the same. Is it indifference or agreement with everything that is being posted or feeling intimidated by a superior intellect....? Facebook have it cracked with the "like" button. There was a film made in the 60's called "The loneliness of the long distance runner". It is a classic of it's time and has a very good cast of actors, who went on to great endeavours. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0056194/ The story comes from a book if you like reading, rather than watching. I can feel a new storyline brewing. In our household Friday is generally the food shopping day. Not set in stone, but it just seems to fit in with our life style. I always go out with a shopping list, but also I keep an eye out for deals that will save some money. Started making a weekly menu many years ago, while working as a nurse with shifts. Have continued the practise as it helps with just buying what you need and food wastage is extremely rare in our home. I write the menus on the kitchen calendar which also has all the activities and social dates on, so it can be viewed by the family and be looked back over when looking for inspiration for meals to make. The other tool I have that keeps the kitchen running smoothly is a pad to write down things that you have used from the store cupboard and need replacing. i.e. coffee. We always have food in the freezer and pantry to rustle up some food for unexpected guests and events that crop up to disrupt the menu. Don't worry, be happy and carry on cooking. Warning When I am an old woman I shall wear purple With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me. And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves And satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter. I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells And run my stick along the public railings And make up for the sobriety of my youth. I shall go out in my slippers in the rain And pick flowers in other people's gardens And learn to spit. You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat And eat three pounds of sausages at a go Or only bread and pickle for a week And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes. But now we must have clothes that keep us dry And pay our rent and not swear in the street And set a good example for the children. We must have friends to dinner and read the papers. But maybe I ought to practice a little now? So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple. Jenny Joseph Not there yet, but I do sometimes wear purple. Practicing! Growing old disgracefully... |
